Community Spotlight

Sons of Bransford (SOB) Awards

Join us for a wonderful evening to honor Jim’s life, celebrate current and past award winners, and mark 20 years of the “S.O.B. Award. Did you know ”

For the past 19 years, the Sons of Bransford (SOB) Awards have aimed to recognize African American men and women who have positively impacted their community's social conditions and the lives of individuals through both quiet and prominent leadership.

These individuals deserve honor and recognition for their achievements despite facing trials and tribulations, serving as sources of strength, courage, and hope for others as peaceful warriors. In the spirit of the award's namesake, Jim Bransford, the honorees deserve to receive their flowers while they can still smell them. Jim inspired multiple generations with his straightforward, practical approach to solving life's challenges. He, embodied resilience, tenacity, and a love for family and community.

Juneteenth

  • It is celebrated annually on June 19th to commemorate the end of slavery in the United States.

  • Juneteenth is also celebrated by the Mascogos, descendants of Black Seminoles who escaped from slavery in 1852 and settled in Coahuila, Mexico.

  • Early Juneteenth celebrations date back to 1866, at first involving church-centered community gatherings in Texas.

  • Juneteenth was recognized as a federal holiday in 2021, when the 117th U.S. Congress enacted and President Joe Biden signed the Juneteenth National Independence Day Act into law.
