Annual Initiatives

Each year, Hawthorne Neighborhood Council leads and supports community initiatives that bring neighbors together, meet immediate needs, and strengthen connection across the neighborhood.

Health & Wellbeing

We support the health and well-being of neighbors by connecting people to resources, information, and care through trusted partnerships and community-based programs

Northside Urban Coalition (NSUC)

NSUC is a Drug Free Communities project of the Hawthorne Neighborhood Council’s Health & Well-being initiative.

NSUC is focused on preventing youth substance use in North Minneapolis and educates them to build trust in authority, live stress free and maintain a safe living and working environment.

The Coalition hosts monthly meetings as well as regular meetings of the Hawthorne Huddle.

Harm Reduction

Through our relationship with Hue-MAN Partnership, our harm reduction work helps reduce the risks associated with substance use by connecting neighbors to education, resources, and lifesaving tools.

Multilingual Health Resources

With the assistance of Hue-MAN Partnership, we share health information in multiple languages so neighbors can easily access and understand important resources.

Mobile Medical Unit (MMU)

Through partnerships with the City of Minneapolis and local healthcare providers, we bring the mobile medical services to our doorsteps.  We help make healthcare more accessible in our neighborhood.

Housing

HNC partners with the nonprofit Center for Energy and Environment (CEE) to offer home improvement loans, grants, and down payment assistance for eligible properties in the Hawthorne neighborhood.

Using City of Minneapolis Neighborhood Revitalization Program (NRP) funds, HNC helps connect residents to these programs while CEE manages applications, eligibility, and loan administration.

Programs

  • Make important home repairs and improvements: Apply for a loan ($1,500 - $15,000) or a grant ($1,000 - $5,000) for permanent interior or exterior improvements.

  • Repair a home in emergency conditions: Apply for a deferred loan ($1,000-$10,000) that can be forgiven after 10 years. For properties that are uninhabitable, dangerous to occupants, or capable of causing severe health problems.

  • Purchase a home in the neighborhood: Apply for a loan (up to $7,500) to help cover a downpayment or closing costs. The loan can be forgiven after 10 years.

Safety

Hawthorne Neighborhood Council supports neighborhood safety by helping residents know who to contact, how to report concerns, and where to find reliable information and support.

  • For emergencies, call 911.

  • For non-emergency concerns, such as suspicious activity, building and safety, or quality of life issues.

Call City of Minneapolis non-emergency services:

  • Contact the Hawthorne Neighborhood Council.

We can help reach out to appropriate partners, offer guidance, or raise neighborhood concerns through established channels.

HNC supports follow-up and communication on these matters, while respecting confidentiality. We work closely with the 4th precinct.
